
Derek Cawley

Mr. Derek Cawley is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgeon at the Mater Private Network, with clinics in Dublin and South Dublin. He specialises in deformity correction, dynamic stabilisation, and comprehensive spine care, treating conditions ranging from degenerative disease to trauma and tumours of the spinal column.
Mr. Cawley began his surgical training in Ireland in 2005 and completed his specialisation in trauma and orthopaedic surgery between 2011 and 2016. He undertook advanced spinal surgery fellowships at internationally renowned centres including L’Institut de la Colonne Vertebrale in Bordeaux and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, London.
He has received multiple prestigious fellowships and awards, including the Eurospine Observership, the Mark Paterson/Bone Joint Journal/EFORT Travelling Fellow Award, the Zimmer Biomet Travelling Fellow Award, and the Ethicon Travel Grant Award. These accolades reflect his commitment to excellence and innovation in spinal surgery.
Mr. Cawley has authored over 50 peer-reviewed research papers, co-authored four book chapters, and co-edited the textbook Spinal Anatomy: Modern Concepts. He is an active committee member of the European Spine Society and contributes to Eurospine PatientLine, a resource for spine patients across Europe.
He also collaborates closely with the Department of Physiotherapy at University College Dublin (UCD), where he serves as Programme Director for the spinal studies module in the Master’s Degree in Physiotherapy.
Mr. Cawley’s clinical expertise and academic leadership make him a key figure in advancing spinal care in Ireland and internationally.
